There has been no easy way to compare professional golfers worldwide. Could you take the PGA Tour money list and compare/convert it to the European Tour (and other tour's) money list? Not really. The Fed Ex Cup points? No because aside from Euros playing on the US tour, no FedEx scoring exists to evaluate Euros (and others) for non-US tournaments (except for the majors and WGC events). In a given week we've had notable simultaneous tournaments like the HP Byron Nelson and the BMW PGA, and Omega Dubai and the ATT National at Pebble beach, etc. So when golfers are playing worldwide in tournaments across many continents, what is one to do? OWGR points are handed out at tournaments on all tours, based in large part on the participants involved, the strength of field, so why not create an index based on the 2011 points OWGR earned by golfers?
Perfect! Our WGO Performance Index allows one to see the year to date excellence (er, that is..whatever level of performance) by golfers no matter where they have been playing.
As a note for analysis, when a golfer has a higher (better) ranking in the WGO Performance Index than the OWGR it is generally because his 2011 is better than his 2010...and so generally fans appreciate this recognition of current performance. Conversely, if the OWGR is higher than the WGO Performance Index, then last year's performance is providing more values than the player's 2011 results. The better OWGR ranking provides something a sponsor might prefer as it allows (usually) a "name" player to hold a bit of the ranking spotlight on into a year where his performance is not as great as previously.
